Mariam Asefi is Germany’s leading expert on the subject of medical tourism, covering all its legal, intercultural, moral and ethical, medical, financial, and practical aspects. Many foreign embassies in Germany and many German embassies abroad deal with this issue on a daily basis.
diplo.news was able to invite Mariam Asefi to report on new developments and the background of this exciting and volatile industry—one that often reflects geopolitical dynamics—and to answer readers’ questions.

Mariam Asefi succeeded Jens Juszczak, Germany’s leading expert in the field of medical tourism, who passed away in 2020 at the age of just 50. She took over the Medical Tourism Research Center at the Bonn-Rhein-Sieg University of Applied Sciences (in Sankt Augustin) and has established herself as a leading authority in the field over the years. Like Jens Juszczak, she advises EU, federal, and state policymakers, diplomatic circles, and hospitals. In addition, the Afghan-born expert is in high demand in many countries as a trainer for intercultural workshops on dealing with foreign patients from the Arab world.
She recently founded “Medical Trust” together with Prof. Dr. Dr. Franz W. Peren as a center of excellence for medical tourism and serves as its managing director.
You can find more in her standard reference work “Praxisbuch Medizintourismus – Grundlagen, Potenziale, Umsetzung” (Medizinisch Wissenschaftliche Verlagsgesellschaft). You are welcome to order the book from diplo.news: Just send an email to diplo@diplo.news!
