One day before the anniversary of 9/11, the United States will be at the centre of attention at diplo.academy and korrespondenten.cafe.

Dr. Josef Braml will present his new book, “Die narzisstische Nation: Amerika, Europa und die Psychologie der Macht” (The Narcissistic Nation: America, Europe and the Psychology of Power), offering a distinctive perspective on political and social developments in the United States: the psychology of power.

‍

How did America’s self-image as the “indispensable nation” evolve into a collective sense of insecurity? Why are economic upheaval, social inequality and the loss of international dominance making parts of American society increasingly receptive to populist promises? And why is Donald Trump less the cause than a symptom of deeper psychological and social developments in the United States?

‍

Braml examines how collective grievances, fears of status loss, resentment and identity conflicts shape political societies and put democratic institutions under pressure. Particular attention is given to the 2026 US midterm elections, which could become a defining moment for American democracy and the future balance of power in Washington.

‍

The discussion will also address the consequences for Europe: How should Europe prepare for a less reliable American security partner? And how can Europe develop greater strategic capacity to defend its interests and values in a world shaped by competing great powers?

‍

Braml’s central thesis: To understand America’s future and Europe’s challenges, it is necessary to look beyond material interests and power politics and also understand the psychology of power.
