The Embassy of the Republic of Yemen in Berlin strongly condemns the announcement by the Houthi terrorist militia threatening international maritime navigation in the Red Sea and the Bab al-Mandab Strait. This dangerous escalation targets one of the world’s most vital maritime trade routes and reflects the militia’s continued reliance on terrorism, piracy, and blackmail against the international community, in blatant violation of international law and relevant United Nations Security Council resolutions.

In this regard, the Embassy wishes to emphasize the following:

First, the Republic of Yemen unequivocally rejects these criminal threats against international shipping and condemns the Houthi militia’s continued acts of piracy, intimidation, and attacks on commercial vessels. Such actions constitute a serious threat to the security of the Red Sea and the Bab al-Mandab Strait, undermine freedom of navigation, and endanger regional and international peace, security, and global trade.

Alleged blockade of Sanaa

Second, the Embassy reiterates that the Houthi claims regarding an alleged “blockade” of Sana’a or Yemen are false and deliberately misleading. The facts clearly demonstrate otherwise. During the first half of 2026 alone, Yemeni ports received more than 400 commercial vessels carrying food supplies, fuel, construction materials, and other essential goods.

It is, in fact, the Houthi militia that has deliberately exacerbated the suffering of the Yemeni people by attacking Yemen’s oil export terminals, depriving the state of its principal source of public revenue, seizing Yemenia Airways aircraft, and obstructing the resumption of civilian air services by rejecting initiatives aimed at facilitating commercial flights, including the Jordanian initiative. The militia has consistently exploited civilian infrastructure for military and political purposes at the expense of the Yemeni population.

Third, the Republic of Yemen reaffirms that peace remains its strategic choice and that the internationally recognized government continues to support all genuine efforts aimed at achieving a comprehensive and lasting political settlement. At the same time, safeguarding Yemen’s sovereignty, independence, territorial integrity, and national security is a constitutional and legal obligation that cannot be compromised. As a sovereign Member State of the United Nations, Yemen has the legitimate right to protect its territory, territorial waters, and national interests in accordance with the UN Charter and international law.

Security in the Red Sea

Fourth, the Embassy expresses its deep appreciation for the Federal Republic of Germany’s consistent support for Yemen and looks forward to further strengthening bilateral cooperation in advancing peace efforts, safeguarding security in the Red Sea and the Bab al-Mandab Strait, protecting international maritime trade routes, and supporting the legitimate institutions of the Yemeni state in pursuit of peace, stability, and prosperity.

The Embassy concludes by calling on the international community to adopt a firmer and more united stance against Houthi threats to international maritime navigation, to ensure the implementation of relevant United Nations Security Council resolutions, and to continue supporting the legitimate Government of Yemen in restoring state authority and sovereignty. Such support remains essential to achieving lasting peace in Yemen while preserving the security of the Red Sea, the Bab al-Mandab Strait, and international trade.
