The sudden death of German diplomat Peter Ptassek shakes not only his colleagues at the Foreign Office, but also the diplo.news team. Ambassador Ptassek was an eloquent speaker at the media workshop who explained the strategic communication of the Federal Foreign Office to press attachés from foreign embassies.
Ptassek, father of four children, was only 63 years old. He died of cancer.
His last post was not abroad, but at headquarters. He has been Strategic Communications Officer at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs since 2022. Prior to that (2018-2022), he was ambassador to Colombia and had made a great contribution to German-Colombian relations.
Born in Gelsenkirchen, he joined the Foreign Service in 1993. In Paris, he worked as a young exchange officer in the French Foreign Ministry, then in the Foreign Affairs Department of the Federal President in Bonn. This was followed by assignments in Moscow, Brussels, Afghanistan, and other locations. Before his appointment as ambassador to Colombia, he was the EU's representative for policy issues and deputy head of the European department. The team at diplo.news is very grateful to Peter Ptassek for his willingness to cooperate.
