While Brussels was wrestling with the historic decision on how Russian assets could be used to benefit Ukraine, a significant change was taking place at the Felleshus, the Nordic Embassies' building in Berlin. Denmark handed over the EU Council Presidency to Cyprus.

Cyprus apparently did not want to wait until the end of the year. The ceremonial handover of responsibility and the legendary EU bicycle took place this Thursday afternoon. At least in Berlin, where Denmark's ambassador Thomas Østrup Møller handed over the half-year office to his Cypriot colleague Maria Papakyriakou. He summed up that the six months of the Danish Presidency had flown by.

In contrast to the kingdom in the north, Cyprus is not a typical cycling nation, admitted Ambassador Papakyriakou. Cyprus has been a member of the EU since 2004 and has now held the Council Presidency for the second time.

Papakyriakou outlined the Cypriot Presidency's guidelines for the next six months, during which it intends to listen, mediate, and shape policy. Relations with the Middle East and southern neighbors are at the top of the agenda. However, the EU enlargement process is also a priority. Of course, Ukraine will also remain a central issue. She spoke of a dynamic Europe that should play a strong role.

Cyprus knows very well what division, flight and disregard for human rights meant, said Papakyriakou. Europe must become more autonomous in defense and security. “We must be able to defend ourselves so that we don't have to defend ourselves. ”

Minister of State for Europe Gunther Krichbaum emphasized that Europe must “show that we stand together and that we all stay together. All of us!” Krichbaum added. “Not everyone in the world means well with us.”
