Jan Tombiński has been head of the Polish Embassy in Germany for a year, but Poland is taking its time to officially appoint him as ambassador. Formally, the experienced diplomat is merely chargé d'affaires ad interim or ‘Charge d'affaires a.i.’ – and has been for exactly one year now. The top diplomat took up his post in Berlin on September 1. The long delay is not only unusual for the ambassador-appointee personally, but is also considered an unfriendly act towards the host country, Germany. diplo.news introduced the quasi-ambassador, a former dissident, father of ten children, when he took office: https://www.diplo.news/articles/wichtige-wechsel-in-der-polnischen-botschaft
Miguel Berger succeeds Viktor Elbling
In the opposite direction, there is a top personnel change to report. Germany is sending Miguel Berger to Poland as its new ambassador. He will replace Ambassador Viktor Elbling, who is now retiring.
Berger was ambassador to the United Kingdom for three years. “After three years in London, I am delighted to have come to Warsaw as designated ambassador,” Berger said on social media. “As NATO members, friendly and cooperative cooperation is very important to me, as are our dynamic economic contacts. I am looking forward to meeting the country and its people. ”
German-British friendship treaty concluded
The final phase of his post in the United Kingdom was the signing of the Friendship Treaty on 17 July 2025 by Federal Chancellor Friedrich Merz and Prime Minister Keir Starmer in London. Foreign Ministers Johann Wadephul and David Lammy also signed the treaty on friendship and bilateral cooperation.
This Treaty provides a bilateral framework for deeper cooperation. It covers the entire spectrum of German-British relations. The focus is on security and defense. The treaty builds on the already strong defense ties and reaffirms the commitment to NATO.
The text of the friendship agreement can be found here at German and on English.
Change of press attachés
The Polish Embassy in Berlin has also announced a change at the level of press attachés. The young diplomat Magdalena Szuber-Zasacka says farewell after four eventful years in Germany and moves to headquarters in Warsaw. She will be succeeded in Berlin by Juliusz Pakuła as diplomat for public relations.
